Our colony of wild European bees
Honey Bees are social insects living in hive with up to 80,000 individuals! There is one Queen, who lays up to 2000 eggs each day! There are around 75,000 female workers who collect and store the nectar and pollen, and build and repair the hive. There are between 300-3000 male drones who are kept for mating with the Queen. The bees here at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, and our hive are part of Australia's Biosecurity program and are regularly monitored. This program is in place to ensure Australia remains free from exotic pests and diseases that would affect honey bees and pollination.
