- Koala, New
There’s a little mate making a big impression at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo!
Meet Bunji, our newest koala joey, who is growing in confidence, exploring his habitat and melting hearts on the Koala Rooftop.
If you’re looking for things to do in Sydney with kids these school holidays, come and discover Bunji’s world. You can meet our koalas, learn about their conservation and join the Creature Rescue Squad for an adventure with a purpose.
A Little Joey with a Big Personality
After spending his first months tucked safely inside his mum’s pouch, Bunji is now on public display at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.
At 11 months old in September 2026, and weighing more than 2kg, he has reached an exciting stage of his development. Visitors can regularly spot him exploring his habitat and munching on eucalyptus leaves.
He’s becoming more adventurous, but mum is still his favourite place to be. Bunji remains happiest close to her as he gets to know the world around him.
His name is fitting for such a lovable little character: Bunji means “mate, close friend, kinsman” in the Warlpiri language.
Where Can You See Bunji in Sydney?
You’ll find Bunji and his koala friends on the Koala Rooftop at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.
Keep an eye out for little Bunji! You might catch him munching on eucalyptus leaves, exploring his home or snuggling up close to mum.
Bunji enjoys plenty of rest as he grows, so he may be having a snooze when you stop by.
Helping Support the Future of Koalas
Bunji is more than an adorable new arrival. He is part of a joint regional koala breeding program with Taronga Zoo, supporting the future of koalas in accredited zoos across Australasia.
The program helps maintain genetically healthy, sustainable koala populations that can contribute to long-term conservation outcomes.
Meeting Bunji is also an opportunity to learn about the challenges facing koalas and the importance of protecting these much-loved endangered Australian animals.
Join Bunji’s Creature Rescue Squad
Every creature needs a hero — and Bunji is helping inspire the next generation!
As the ambassador for WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo’s Creature Rescue Squad, Bunji encourages little explorers to learn about threatened animals and discover how they can help.
Running until 1 November 2026, this interactive family activity invites children to complete missions, follow the trail and learn about conservation as they explore.
Creature Rescue Squad is included in general admission, making it an exciting addition to your school holiday visit.
For an even bigger adventure, continue your rescue mission at neighbouring SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, where there are more creatures and conservation stories to discover.
