Sydney has announced a new executive appointment, welcoming RJ the quokka as the newly created role of Head of Visitor Happiness & Good Vibes.
The charismatic 3.8kg quokka is around 4.5 years old and has officially relocated to his new home in Darling Harbour, where his primary responsibilities will include boosting visitor happiness, posing for photographs and sharing smiles with guests from around the world.

The species is widely known as "the world's happiest animal" and RJ has now secured one of Sydney's most enviable harbourfront addresses, where he is already settling into life in the heart of the city. Native to Western Australia, quokkas are famous for their smiley appearance and curious personalities, and his arrival gives locals and tourists the rare opportunity to see one of Australia's most beloved native species up close.
While celebrated for their cheerful appearance, quokkas are currently classified as Vulnerable, making ambassador animals like RJ important in helping raise awareness of the challenges facing native wildlife.

"RJ is a perfect fit for the role," said WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo Zookeeper, Emily Partridge. "He brings exceptional qualifications to the position, including a permanent smile and a natural ability to brighten anyone's day. While the title is tongue-in-cheek, he also plays an important role as an ambassador for his species. Through seeing quokkas up close, guests can learn more about these unique animals and the conservation efforts helping to protect them in the wild."

Visitors can now see WILD LIFE Sydney's new Head of Happiness & Good Vibes in Darling Harbour, along with some of Australia's most iconic wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos and saltwater crocodiles.
