WILDLIFE Treehouse 4

With school starting again, now is the perfect time to kick-start good reading habits.

Get in the routine

School is back and so is reading! We all know that reading to and with your child nurtures their interest in books and builds their reading confidence. The question is: how do we turn our little readers into life-long readers?

The key to encouraging a love of books is consistency and routine. The more you read to or with your child, the more your child will get used to it and their love of books will grow naturally.

Bring the books to life

If your children love wildlife and reading about it, why not bring the books they love to life with a trip to the zoo? At WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, we not only have an array of iconic Aussie animals but we also have a wide range of signs and information about our wildlife, which you can read to your children or your kids can practice and develop their reading skills. This is also a fun and educating family activity to do together.

Enhance Vocabulary

‘Endangered.’ ‘Herbivorous.’ ‘Nocturnal.’ Kids will be exposed to new words and concepts with the assistance of fact boards and fast facts shared by our keepers. An expanded vocabulary can help them better understand the world, as well as express themselves more effectively.

Tips to nurture your child’s reading

It can sometimes be challenging to keep your child interested in reading. Check out this article from our friends at Hachette Australia, “Nurturing Children's Reading”, which lists some simple steps and tips to encourage, nurture and improve your child’s reading this school year.
