6 Amazing Things To Do in Barangaroo, Sydney

Barangaroo is a jewel in Sydney’s crown, with so much to see and do right beside the water. Here are our favourite things to do in Barangaroo.

Public Art

The best kind of public art makes a massive impact, and at seven storeys tall, Shell Wall 2015 does exactly that! You’ll find it at the southern end of Barangaroo, standing like a beautiful sentry. A project this large is naturally a collaborative effort between Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones and Bidjigal/Eora elder Esme Timbery. It’s a big nod to traditional shell work, with a modern approach. Esme’s family have been shell artists going back four generations. Barangaroo was the site of many shell middens, and the artwork looks a lot like an oyster reef climbing the wall.

Best Brunch

Brunch truly is the best meal of the day. Eggs. Coffee. Sweet treats. More coffee.

Head to The Canteen to find a whole range of options, including Silverbeet and Iron Grill. On the go? Bel & Brio fresh food providore does ready-to-eat brekkies. For baked goods, hit up Bourke Street Bakery. You’ll want to try everything! Like most eateries at Barangaroo, there’s always something unexpected. For example, Devon Cafe serves brunch, with an Asian twist. And then there’s the coffee! Local favourites, Toby’s Estate and Campos both live here, alongside Dukes Coffee and Micro by Coffee Alchemy. Expect only the purest caffeine hit!

Independent Labels

Barangaroo’s laneways are packed with highly desirable items. Title Store has the biggest range of art books and the latest vinyl. The David Jones micro store features a beautifully edited selection of fashion. MJ Bale is a local menswear designer with a well deserved high-end reputation. Think merino wool suits and linen blazers. And, at the Collector Store, discover exciting homewares from around the world. You’ll be browsing for hours!

WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo

A short stroll away are some of the cutest native animals you’ll find. WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, located in the heart of the city, is the closest place to see Kangaroo Island kangaroos. Their natural habitat suffered severely in the big bushfires, so it’s heartening to see these little hoppers doing so well. You’ll also get up close to a quokka, echidnas, princess parrots and many others. Even their names are cute (meet Topsy and Bub, the Tassie Devils!) It’s a wild way to have a genuine Aussie animal experience.

Aboriginal Cultural Tours

Barangaroo is rich in indigenous history, and no-one knows it better than environmental educator, Clarence Slockee, and the team of Aboriginal Visitor Services Guides. Learn about the site's natural history and why it’s so important to the people of the Eora Nation. Get caught up in fascinating stories of the past and understand how they affect the future. This tour is 100% amazing, and you’ll come away afterwards with newly opened eyes.

Wulugul Walk

Wulugul Walk has finally opened up the foreshore for locals and visitors alike, with well-built pathways and around 75,000 native Australian plants. At the northern end is Barangaroo Reserve, which has spectacular views of the city and boutique harbourside suburbs. Watch ferries glide past and enjoy the sunshine from your lofty position on the hillside. BYO picnic and wine (yes, it’s allowed), and if you’re still lounging about at the end of the day, catch the brilliant sunset over the harbour.
