If timing is anything to go by, we have been extremely ‘good’ this year, receiving two extra special early Christmas gifts eight days ahead of the annual holiday – two orphaned Kangaroo Island Kangaroo joeys, Dawn and Dusk.
The two female baby roos, who are seven-months of age and weigh between 4 and 5 kilos each, were orphaned in the wild after their mother was sadly hit by a car. Unable to survive in the wild on their own, they were rescued and brought to Wild Life Sydney Zoo where a team of our keepers provide 24/7 care for them both.
“These baby roos are the best Christmas present we could have ever received. Due to their young age, they are completely dependent so they are with me everywhere I go. I am absolutely loving playing surrogate mum to them!” says Emily Paterson, Keeper at Wild Life Sydney Zoo.
We named them Dawn and Dusk after the term ‘crepuscular’ which means most active at sunrise and sunset, which describes their behaviour perfectly!
Dawn and Dusk will continue to receive round-the-clock supervision from our team, and once they are older and have met milestones will join the rest of their roo pals in our Kangaroo Walkabout exhibit. Meanwhile, the baby roos will go through a period of adjustment, coming out to greet guests and learn to adapt to their surroundings at 1 pm daily.
We invite you to come along these summer holidays to visit our newest arrivals in person!
