Kangaroo Duo Dot and Matilda Turn Three!
Wild Life Sydney Zoo’s cheeky Kangaroo duo – Dot and Matilda – have celebrated their third birthday with a party in their Kangaroo Walk-About display.
Keepers hand-crafted a delicious custom cake which included Dot and Matilda’s favourite foods, sweet potato, pomegranate and kale, garnished with Australian-native flowers. It wouldn't be a party without presents and the keepers created a special enrichment toy for the inquisitive duo, a box filled with hay, flowers, fresh corn and maize, a ‘sometimes’ treat for the pair.
Staying true to the ‘three-year-old’ stereotype, Dot and Matilda used their tiny paws to rip into their enrichment box, squabbling over who got the first treat. In a similar fashion to a human birthday party, the celebrations were gate-crashed by two unsuspecting visitors, two Australian Lorikeets. The lorikeets tried their beaks at nibbling away at the native flowers, climbing all over the back of Dot in a bid to get the best bit of each flower.
Dot and Matilda are Kangaroo Island Kangaroos and arrived at Wild Life Sydney Zoo in late-2015 after they were orphaned at a young age. Senior Keeper Caroline Monro took them in and provided 24/7 care, including providing the pair with night-time bottle feeds and carrying them around work during the day. Once old enough, the pair joined the attraction’s Kangaroo Walk-About display alongside Wild Life Sydney Zoo’s other Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Martha and Daphne. Since then, both Dot and Matilda have had keepers wrapped around their little paws, with their unique personalities, capturing the hearts of guests and staff. Dot, is known for her independent attitude while Matilda is known for her love of food and cuddles.
