Going nuts for Nutsy!
WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is celebrating a brand new name for its gorgeous koala joey - Nusty!
Keepers are thrilled with the progress of little Nutsy, with the furry youngster rapidly gaining weight and with each day continuing to thrive and grow.
"Nutsy is gradually becoming more independent and adventurous, however she still doesn't mind a close snuggle up to Mum for protection," said WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo mammal keeper, Jarryd Carver.
"She's feeding really well, in fact, she's almost doubled her weight over the past two months! Nutsy's currently weighing in at 1.9 kilograms, which is optimum weight for her age. She has almost completely weaned from Mum and will have milk about once per day now. Nutsy has already started to develop favourite foods, preferring Swamp Mahogany and Tallowood leaves over other eucalyptus types."
The public voted on what name to call the little joey. Nutsy, the name of beloved children's character Blinky Bill's sister, was the clear favourite, though Shiloh was a close second.
Nutsy has also become firm friends with WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo's other koala joey, Euccy, and the pair can often be seen cuddling or getting up to mischief together at Koala Rooftop.
"Our koala joeys Nutsy and Euccy are already firm favourites with visitors and provide us with the perfect opportunity to educate guests on the current threats faced by koalas in the wild, including rapid loss of habitat as well as dog attacks and car strikes," continued Mr Carver.
"Australia needs to do more to protect these iconic animals and education is just one of many steps that can be taken."
