Darling Harbour Welcomes Koala Joey
WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is celebrating the arrival of the first koala joey for the 2015 breeding season! We are so excited to welcome the newest fluffy addition to the family!
- Birth Date: 14 January 2015
- Gender: Male
- Parents: Erica and Jack
- Favourite Food: Eucalyptus leaves
- Name: This fun fact is coming soon!
Yet to be named, the tiny bundle of joy was welcomed into the world on 14 January 2015 with mum Erica keeping the furry youngster close to her pouch. Born and bred at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, the new koala joey has almost tripled in size since its birth seven months ago. Both mum and bub are healthy and the new birth is an exciting time for the best attraction in Darling Harbour!
First-time Dad Jack and Mum Erica have embraced their new roles as parents and the male koala joey is slowing becoming more curious, venturing outside of mum's pouch on rare occasions and enjoying his first meal of eucalyptus leaves for the first time a couple of days ago.
Currently, the status of koalas in the wild is listed as vulnerable, so with every successful breeding season we have will hopefully keep the future of this precious species safe for generations to come. Find out more about koala conservation with WILD LIFE Conservation Fund.
Due to the young age and size of Sydney's newest Koala Joey, Keepers will keep him under close watch in the attraction's Koala Nursery until he is developed enough to be moved with mum to Koala Rooftop to hang out with last year's koala joeys Euccy and Nutsy. Nutsy and Euccy love their new home at Koala Rooftop where guests can get up close and personal with the adorable duo for their very own Koala Encounter.
