Australia has many types of habitats, each one vastly different from the next. Take a walk on the wild side, and experience them all in one place, right in the heart of the Sydney CBD.
From the tropical top end to the cold southern extremes, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo takes you through the environmental zones that make Australia unique. The best part is, you’re guaranteed to spot lots of wildlife, including the Aussie Big 5: koalas, kangaroos, platypuses, a crocodile and a wombat.
The Daintree Rainforest zone is modelled on the world heritage-listed area in Queensland. It’s where the rainforest meets the sea, and there in the shadows, lurks the world’s deadliest bird… named Princess! Don’t let the dainty name fool you. Princess is a cassowary, and looks like a cross between an emu and a velociraptor! Cassowaries are fascinating to observe, with a bony ‘casque’ on their head, and an enormous claw on each foot. Also hanging out in the Daintree is a gorgeous family of pademelons.
Every day at 10am and 2pm, there’s a 90-minute Australian Wild Life Tour that gets you closer to Australian animals. It’s one of the must-do activities in Sydney. You’ll be in the capable company of two zookeepers, who’ll share their expert knowledge, and point out the important stuff. You’ll even be allowed into restricted areas, which are usually off-limits to the public. This is your chance to get some up-close selfies with koalas and other Aussie animal friends. Just make sure you book at least 2-days in advance.
Take a tropical walk through the Butterfly Tropics zone, which is hot and humid, like Australia’s top end, the Northern Territory. In a special enclosure, butterflies fly freely, flitting through the ferns. The colours and patterns are remarkable. If you can’t see them flying, have a look at the colourful feeders that are hanging from the ceiling where they eat!
If you’re visiting with kids under ten, make your way to Koala Rooftop for story time, happening each day at 11am. And don’t miss the daily Zookeeper talks and scheduled feeding times where you can learn all about our other incredible animals, including kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, and our mini-beasts. Crocodile feeding time is also a must-see. Chomp Chomp!
The Kangaroo Walkabout Zone features the bouncing residents of Kangaroo Island, off South Australia. It’s also the location for the interactive Aussie Animal Encounter show. See lizards, echidnas and the adorable quokka, Davey, known for his cute smile. In the wild, quokkas are another island dweller, residing on sandy Rottnest Island, in Western Australia. That’s the great thing about WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo – your simple Sydney walk allows you to experience so many areas of this big country. So, enjoy your bushwalk through Australia’s habitat zones, and take some pics of the amazing animals you discover and #WildLifeSydneyZoo
