From vast, picnic-perfect plains to adventurous wildlife playgrounds, here is a list of the best kid-friendly parks in Sydney.
This kids paradise is just 15 minutes from the Sydney CBD. Within the park lies local-favourite, Ian Potter Children’s WILD PLAY Garden – focused around nature-play. Run, skip and jump between a bamboo forest, banksia tunnels and water fountains. It’s great for children of all ages. And Ma and Pa – you’ll be pleased to know there’s a coffee van on site too.
Royal Botanic Gardens
The Sydney bucket-list staple! If you’ve been busy exploring the CBD, the Royal Botanic Gardens is steps away; a great rest for mums and bubs. You can learn a thing or two about native plants and Aboriginal culture. Plus, there are stunning views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour.
Take in the unique sights of Anzac Bridge and Darling Harbour at this new harbourside park. As boats sail past, dip your toes in the refreshing sea or climb about the sandstone rocks. There are hilly, soft lawns to roll around in and run amuck. Once everyone’s tired out, watch the clouds go by and take in a magnificent sunset together.
15 minutes south of the city lies these 40 hectares of wetland fun. There’s a spongy-floored playground with climbing nets, swings and bridges that’ll keep the kids occupied for hours. Go for a walk or ride a bike, and meet many friendly faces along the way. Bonus: cute dog sightings everywhere! Up for a family feast? Make the most of the BBQ facilities.
Pirrama Park Playground
For a laidback inner-city experience, visit the city’s neighbouring suburb of Pyrmont. Especially fun on a hot day, the 1.8-hectare Pirrama Park has water spouts, shady sandpits and other merry playground classics. Teens will love the flat, waterside grasslands, where they can kick a ball around.
The Playground at Darling Harbour
This is arguably one of the best parks in the country! Swinging, sliding, spinning, gliding, hanging, crawling, climbing, leaping, dropping… phew! You name it; you can do it here. Located in the Sydney CBD, this innovative playground attracts both local and travelling tots. Toddlers love the water buckets, while bigger kids can’t get enough of the giant slides. Some just come here for the thrilling 21-metre flying fox. Surrounding the park is an abundance of family-friendly restaurants to duck into after a long afternoon of play.
What about walking, playing, learning and discovering Australia’s favourite animals – all at the same time? Take your whole family out to explore different nature worlds at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo. Get a beautiful slice of the Daintree Rainforest; be enchanted by colourful fluttering butterflies. Meet sleepy fluffy koalas up close, and venture through Kangaroo Walkabout to spot cute joeys (baby roos!). And do you dare to see the teeth of the largest living reptile in the world? Come eye-to-eye with the resident Saltwater Crocodile, Rocky! From echidnas to night critters, there’s so much to see at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo.
Travel tip: you can easily join your Barangaroo Reserve or The Playground experience together with a visit to WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo on the same day. They’re walking distance from each other. Now that’s a fun day out!
