This Mother’s Day we are recognising one of the most loyal and caring mothers in the animal kingdom; a mother that is fiercely protective of its young and looks after them for up to twelve months. It’s the Giant Burrowing Cockroach!
The Giant Burrowing Cockroach is native to Australia and plays a key role in the eco-system. As they help break down plant material, they aren’t considered a pest and can actually make really great pets! They are the worlds heaviest species of cockroach and can weigh up to 35g and measure up to 8cm in length.
Zoo Keeper, Bec Hancox says, “They live for around ten years and can have over 150 babies in their lifetime so this Mother’s Day we wanted to introduce you all to Betty - one of our Giant Burrowing Cockroaches and also one of the most loving and protective mothers we have in the zoo. Betty is six years old and has thirteen babies - all of which she’s pretty smitten with.”
