We had some unlikely Mothers celebrating Mother's Day over the
weekend here at WILD LIFE Sydney.
Many of our keepers spend time hand-raising our animals, a task
requiring as much time, effort, love and attention as human
babies!
On appearance, one of our Bird Keepers, Marcus, seems to be the
most unlikely mother around! This big burly bloke, however, shows
his soft side in hand-raising a tiny baby Bush Budgerigar,
affectionately named 'Togs'.
Togs was born here at WILD LIFE Sydney, and was not being cared
for by its mother. The keepers were concerned for the baby's
welfare, and decided it was best for it to be hand-raised. Marcus
provides all the care the baby bird requires, including waking up
to feed Togs every 2-3 hours!
We are very proud here at WILD LIFE Sydney to have been
successful in breeding a range of birds, including Zebra Finches,
Bush Budgerigar, Rose-crowned Fruit Dove, and the critically
endangered Gouldian Finch. The birds can be seen on display
throughout all outdoor areas here at WILD LIFE Sydney, thanks to
our aviary mesh roof, as well as in the Outback Adventure Animal
Encounter Show.
